Professional SATCOM Curriculum Course Development

Professional SATCOM Curriculum Course Development

Project Title: Development and Implementation of Professional SATCOM Certification Course for Engineers, Technicians, and Entrepreneurs in the Satellite Communication and Telecommunication Sector in Ghana
Lead Institution: Earth Observation Research and Innovation Centre (EORIC), University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR)

Project Summary

This project aims to bridge the critical skills gap in Ghana’s satellite communication and telecommunication sectors. By developing a Professional SATCOM Certification Course, EORIC seeks to train engineers, technicians, and entrepreneurs to meet global competency standards—empowering them for employment, innovation, and industry growth.

Background

Despite the growing demand for satellite-based services across Africa, Ghana’s industry lacks qualified professionals trained in international standards (e.g., VSAT installation, satellite news gathering, mobile satellite systems). Most training options are expensive, overseas, or informal.

EORIC will establish a certified, locally delivered SATCOM course accredited by CTVET and aligned with the Global VSAT Forum (GVF) standards. The training will include both theory and hands-on experience and will be offered annually at EORIC’s ground station facilities.

Project Objectives

Overall Goal:
To establish a certified, professional SATCOM training course and training hub in Ghana.

Specific Objectives:

  • Develop a comprehensive SATCOM curriculum to meet local and international standards.
  • Build the capacity of 20 certified trainers.
  • Roll out short courses and professional certification programmes annually.
  • Register and accredit the course through CTVET.
  • Provide practical training using SATCOM infrastructure.

Project Activities

  1. Training Needs Analysis
  2. Curriculum Development (Competency-Based)
  3. Trainer Certification (20 Beneficiaries)
  4. Accreditation through CTVET
  5. Course Roll-out and Delivery

The training hub will collaborate with Oasis Networks Ltd. (a GVF-certified partner) for technical expertise, materials, and quality assurance.

Project Partners

  • Oasis Networks Ltd (Oasis Academy): Provides training materials, GVF-standard content, and examination expertise.
  • CTVET: Regulatory body for technical and vocational education accreditation.
  • UENR-EORIC: Training provider, host institution, and developer of the SATCOM hub.

Impact & Sustainability

Benefits:

  • Improved employment and entrepreneurial opportunities in Ghana’s space tech industry.
  • Long-term training revenue for UENR through special agency MoUs.
  • Technical capacity development at local, national, and regional levels.
  • Expansion of SATCOM services into underserved regions.

Sustainability Strategy:

  • MoUs with TVET/SHTS schools for student training.
  • Annual and specialised training programmes for agencies and foreign trainees.
  • Internally Generated Funds (IGF) from the training programme reinvested into EORIC operations.
  • 5-year strategic plan to scale and maintain training operations.
