UENR HOSTS THE 2ND AFRIGEOSS SYMPOSIUM IN SUNYANI - EORIC
The 2nd AfriGEOSS Symposium was held in Sunyani on 13 to 15 June 2017 at the TYCO City Hotel. The symposium was organized by the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) with support from the Earth Observation Research & Innovation Centre (EORIC) based in the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani-Ghana. The theme of the symposium was “Delivering Earth Observations for Policy and Sustainable Societal Impact in Africa”
The Symposium brought together over 160 national and international experts, from government departments, intergovernmental organizations, education and research institutions, national remote sensing centres, space institutes and agencies, industry and not-for-profit organizations, with a shared interest in closing data gaps and enable improved access and uptake of Earth observations in societal benefit areas including as food security and agriculture, water resources management, urban development, forest management, climate change adaptation and land cover mapping.
The presentations and panel discussions throughout the 3-day event demonstrated the use of Earth Observations, by national institutions and regional initiatives in support of national and continental policies and global agendas. The Symposium provided a platform to openly and critically engage on the best mechanism to strengthen Africa capability in Earth Observations through the AfriGEOSS Initiative and therefore Africa’s contribution in the development of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems.
