Space Science Technology has made a significant contribution towards the preparedness, prevention and relief stages of flood and disaster management. Earth Observation satellites provide comprehensive and multi-temporal coverage of large areas. This provides valuable information for the continuous atmospheric monitoring of the surfaces fluxes related to floods and droughts. Remote Sensing (RS) Technology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide real-time monitoring, early warning and damage assessment for drought and flood disasters. As part of its aim related to capacity building of professionals in the country, the Earth Observation Research and Innovation Centre (EORIC) of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) organised training on flood and drought modelling using earth observation for professionals. The training was held at Adenta-Accra from the 22nd to 24th August 2016. The training was aimed at providing practical skills and hands-on experience on a simulated working scenario, analysis and up-to-date knowledge on how to apply space science and technologies with open source software to understand climate variability and climate change. Participants were expected to be able to use existing models for informed knowledge of climate variability and improved strategies for climate adaptation in disaster management, water, health, food and environmental security. Participants were trained in the application of the data analysis in specific fields such as water and disaster management, food and environment safety, climate effect etc. Participants were from the UENR and Newmont Ghana Ltd. The training was facilitated by Martin Kyereh Domfeh, Water Resources Engineer, Caleb Mensah, Meteorologist and Akpoti Komlavi, Climate Change Expert.
